Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water Recalled After Infant Gets Cryptosporidium Infection

A scarier-than-usual food recall to report today. While all food recalls are disturbing, this one is especially so because it impacts babies. Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water is being recalled because it is contaminated with Cryptosporidium, a parasite that causes a nasty intestinal illness. At least one six-week-old infant has reportedly gotten sick from this stuff. The Cryptosporidium parasite causes diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, fever, nausea and vomiting. It can be particularly dangerous for young children, who are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration.
MOM Enterprises Inc., the manufacturer of Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water, is recalling the apple flavored variety of the product. The recalled Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water bears the code 26952V and an expiration date of October 2008 (10/08). The product is labeled “Baby’s Bliss. Pediatrician Recommended Gripe Water. Apple Flavor.” It is an herbal supplement used to relieve gas and stomach discomfort associated with colic, hiccups and teething in infants and children.
Anyone who has the recalled Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water should throw it away immediately. And if it has been used, caregivers need to be on the lookout for the signs of Cryptosporidium infection, not just in children, but in themselves as well. The bacteria can be passed through stools, and with all those diaper changes there is a good chance that babies won’t be the only ones infected. If a baby does show signs of the infection, it’s important that they see a doctor. Babies really can’t handle dehydration, so parents will want to ask about fluid replacement options.
