Bankrupt Topps Meat Company To Be Bought Out By Premio Foods
December 27th, 2007 amy
Topps Meat Company, which filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in November, closed its doors for business after having to recall 21.7 million pounds of beef for E. coli contamination in September. The federal Centers for Disease Control said more than 100 people in eight states and Canada became sickened after eating the meat. Now, Hawthorne, New Jersey-based Premio Foods wants to buy Topps out.
According to legal documents filed in the bankruptcy case, Premio has offered $794,605 to buy Topps’ assets and trademarks. Among the assets are close to two million pounds of potentially contaminated meat. Per the purchase agreement, Premio will pay 10 cents per pound for 1.3 million pounds of packaged inventory and five cents per pound for nearly 536,000 pounds of raw meat. By law, Premio will be required to destroy this meat should the buy-out happen. The bid hearing is scheduled for January 8.
