Whittier Farms Milk Products Contaminated With Listeria Killed Two
December 28th, 2007 amy
Massachusetts health officials are warning consumers not to drink milk products from Whittier Farms in Shrewsbury after two elderly men in Worchester County died from consuming the listeria-contaminated products. The Department of Public Health has identified four cases of the listeriosis, including the two deaths. Whittier Farms has suspended operations and distribution until a source of contamination is identified. The firm’s bulk of their distribution is home delivery to customers in the greater Worcester/Shrewsbury area.
Listeriosis is particularly dangerous for the elderly, the very young, and pregnant women. Two pregnant women in North Carolina recently suffered stillbirths due to listeria contaminated cheese products. Every year, about 2,500 people in the U.S. get listeriosis.
Approximately 200 of every 1,000 cases result in death. Symptoms generally include fever, nausea or diarrhea, and muscle aches. Headache, stiff neck, balance loss or even convulsions can occur if the infection spreads to the nervous system.
