New York Botulism Warning Issued Over Smoked Kuta Fish and Boney Fish (Herring)
May 23rd, 2008 amy
Upstate New Yorkers are being warned over a foodborne botulism risk associated with certain kinds of fish sold in the state. State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker warns consumers not to eat “Smoked Kuta Fish and Boney Fish (Herring)” sold in the Rochester and Syracuse area because of potential botulism contamination. The product was found by state food inspectors during a routine check at the African Caribbean Market on North Clinton Avenue in Rochester.
This fish recall was ordered because the product was uneviscerated. Regulations prohibit sale of uneviscerated fish because they’ve been linked to botulism poisoning. The product was sold in refrigerated, uncoded polybags.
