New Mexican salmonella outbreak source still unknown

Filed May 29th, 2008 joshua

Five of 19 known salmonella poisonings in New Mexico since early May have resulted in hospitalizations. Still, state health officials there have not been able to identify a source.

Ten of the cases in New Mexico have been identified as having the same strain of the food borne illness, Salmonella St. Paul, according to Las Cruces Sun News.

It is believed many people who may have contracted salmonella did not report it. Health officials are asking physicians to pay special attention to fever and diarrhea complaints and to test those for salmonella.

Reports of the illness began filtering in to physicians and state officials since May 8, all ranging in ages from 6 to 82. Counties affected by the outbreak are McKinley, San Juan, Curry, Socorro and Bernalillo counties.

The Sun News also reports salmonella outbreaks in Utah (1 case), Texas (14).
