New Era Canning Company To Reopen After Botulism Shutdown
July 1st, 2008 amy
The New Era Canning Company, shut down by the FDA for botulism concerns, is about to reopen.
New Era’s botulism recalls began in December of last year with a few cans of green beens and eventually expanded into all of the company’s canned vegetables. Unfortunately, many of these vegetables has already been distributed to school cafeterias, restaurants and other food service establishments. The beans were also sold to Kroger, which eventually recalled its three bean salad once word of the New Era recall trickled down. Still, many of these potentially contaminated beans, and later other canned vegetables, were consumed before the recalls. Fortunately, no one has been reported ill as a result. Foodborne botulism is often deadly.
According to the Muskegon Chronicle, officials determined that the bacterium cause stemmed from a cracked water line that allowed soil to get in the water and eventually contaminate some of the product. New Era Canning has since repaired the plant’s water system, which includes four water wells on the site.
