Whatcha gonna pick? How about plastic from your Hot Pockets.

Filed August 26th, 2008 joshua

Nearly a quarter-million pounds of Nestle’s very popular Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizza are being recalled because they could have plastic in them.

This is the second recall in a month from Nestle Prepared Foods Inc. involving plastics found in its foods. Last month the company issued a recall on its Lean Pockets spinach and artichoke chicken sandwiches. Overall, it is its third of 2008 specifically regarding Hot Pockets.

Four consumers have reported finding hard, red plastic pieces in the Pepperoni Pizza flavor of the Hot Pockets.

The recall focuses on this specific flavor of the sandwiches and is further limited to the 54-ounce, 12-pack cartons. On each carton “8157544614D” “EST 7721A” and “Best Before Jan2010″ is printed.

Nestle told the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture the products in question were manufactured on June 5 and distributed nationwide. It believes plastic pieces, which have the potential of being extremely sharp, fragmented into the food during the production process.

Two injuries were linked to the plastics found in the previous recall.

In an unrelated recall earlier this year, Nestle removed two more varieties from store shelves out of fear some of the beef used could be sourced to the giant Westland/Hallmark beef recall.
