May 29th, 2009 joshua
Chang Farm, of Wheatley, Mass., has recalled specific lots of its Bean Sprouts and Soy Sprouts because they could be contaminated withe Listeria monocytogenes.
The affected sprouts are packaged in 10-pound bags and 12-ounce plastic bags, labeled under Chang Farm Brand as Soy Sprouts. The sprouts have a “Sell By” date of May 23, 2009, or May 24, 2009, and Bean Sprouts with “Use By” date of May 23, 2009, or May 24, 2009.
These are the latest in a growing number of sprouts to be recalled because of bacterial contamination. There is no indication, however, that this recall is related to the numerous recalls of Alfalfa Sprouts in the Midwest and western U.S.
A retail sample of the product proved the presence of Listeria on the sprouts. They were sold in stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.
No illnesses have been linked to these contaminated sprouts.
Grocery stores, food service locations and other retailers who may have these on hand should discard them immediately or return them for a refund.
